Are Epsom salts ok to use in spas? A warning:

Donot use Epsom salts in spas or swim spasEpsom Salts, were first named for a saline spring in Surrey, England and have the official chemical composition being Magnesium Sulphate which is an Alkaline chemical compound.
Epsom salts have long been thought to have a number of healing properties which is why many people find relief soaking parts or their entire bodies in Epsom salts. A few of the reported benefits are relief of sore muscles and joints, increased ability to flush toxins, and relief from joint problems.
That being said you should never add Epsom salts to your spa or swim spa.

Here is why:
Salt levels above 1500 ppm can be corrosive in a spa depending on the pH. The recommended level to get the most from Epsom salts is 20,000ppm. Yes you read that correctly. Say you have emptied your spa and now only have fresh water in it with no chlorine, you load in your Epsom salts and you will now create a chemical reaction that will attack dissimilar metals. One of the metals will be corroded. This quite often is the heater element or parts of the pump.
Soaking in Epsom salts is a good thing but use it in your bath tub or foot bath where you drain and change the water with every use.
More about healing salts:
The magnesium content in Epsom salts is transdermal (able to cross through the skin and into the body), and can help to relax sore muscles, irritated nervous systems, and to help better oxygenate the body.

Since the centre of the heme molecule (red blood cell) in the body has at its core a magnesium molecule that holds four oxygen molecules in place.  The number varies according to several different research studies, but it is proposed that roughly 85% of all humans are magnesium deficient.  This, of course, leads to lower oxygenation in the body, which can make us more tired and less resistant to many harmful states.

The Sulphur component in the Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salts) is also able to pass through the skin and helps to accumulate oxygen in the system while removing or better said dissolving the lactic acid in the tissues.  This makes for less soreness, and an overall greater feeling of wellness.

Lactic Acid is a natural by product of muscle metabolism performing its regular duties for the body.  When there is a strain/sprain or tight muscle, the lactic acid builds up in that region and can cause a variety of symptoms.  Some of the symptoms are soreness, tightness, burning, cramping, spasms, or reduced muscle movement. There are many other countless health benefits including helping to alleviate skin problems, healing cuts or scrapes, treating cold and congestion in the bodies’ tissues, and drawing toxins from the body on many levels.

Magnesium ions can help relax the mind reducing irritability by down regulating the effects of adrenaline on the nervous system.  Clinical studies show that Epsom salt can help balance electrolytes in your body, ensuring proper functioning of the muscles, nerves and enzymes in the body.

Magnesium can also help with calcium balances in the body that serve to conduct electrical impulses throughout the body.  Some studies and clinical use of Magnesium sulphate (Epsom Salts) has shown to improve the vascular system by increasing circulation, preventing blood clots, and reducing the possibility of heart attack and strokes.  The evidence in the last sentence is noted for things observed clinically, but does in no way say that it prevents these health issues from occurring.  Proper levels of Magnesium sulphate has been seen to also assist with insulin efficiency in the body assisting with insulin resistance and diabetes.

Dead Sea Salts are noted for being from the Dead Sea in Israel.  Their properties have long been regarded as having many healing properties.  Dead Sea Salts contain as many as 21 minerals including calcium, zinc, potassium, magnesium, sodium, sulphur, bromide, and iodine.

Many of these essential minerals are lost through daily activities and need to be topped off to maintain a healthy tissue balance.  Dead Sea Salts with its high mineral content are known to assist in cleansing and detoxifying our body.
People have travelled far and wide to receive the many benefits of the Dead Sea Salts.  Some of the benefits are healing all kinds of skin ailments, increasing cell metabolism of nutrients, relaxing the muscles and the spirit while calming the nervous system, assisting the thyroid glands and their function, helping those that suffer from asthma, helping with many levels of detoxifying in the liver and skin, and helps to strengthen membranes essential for healthy cells while lowering inflammation.

Use these salt for healing in you bath tub only and do not use them in your spa or swim spa.

CLOSING THOUGHTS on SALTS: “Neither sugar nor salt tastes particularly good by itself. Each is at its best when used to season other things. Love is the same way. Use it to "season" people.” ? Vera Nazarian, The Perpetual Calendar of Inspiration
