Why Spa Safety Bypasses Matter (And Why We Won’t Sell a Spa Without Them)

Why Spa Safety Bypass Matter

Spa World has been around for over 40 years, and in that time, we’ve learned a lot about spas, what makes them great, what keeps them running, and most importantly, what makes them safe.

We’re proud to be one of the largest spa retailers in the world, and there's one thing we never compromise on: safety. That’s why every spa we sell has a safety bypass system built into the footwell. Not all spa brands offer this, but we believe it’s a non-negotiable feature. Here’s why.

In this guide, we’ll explain:

  • What a bypass filtration system is and how it works
  • Why Spa World brands like Vortex®, Fisher®, and Jacuzzi® Spas choose this system over the no-bypass method used by some other brands (e.g., HotSpring®)
  • The pros and cons of each system
  • Why footwell filtration matters and how Spa World brands design around it

What Is a Bypass Filtration System?

A bypass filtration system adds extra suction points (called bypasses) in the spas, usually in the footwell. These help keep the water flowing safely, even if the primary filter gets blocked.

How it works:

  • Water normally flows through the main filter.
  • If that filter gets blocked (by leaves, debris or a person), the bypass suction points take over, reducing the suction at the filter pipe.
  • This helps prevent strong suction from building up and protects people from injury.

Bypass systems are an important safety feature, especially for families with children.

"We only sell spas with approved safety bypasses. They cost a little more, but it’s the right thing to do. After all, seat belts and airbags have an expense, but you wouldn't buy a car without them."

Why Bypass Systems Matter for Safety and Performance

When choosing a spa, safety and long-term performance should never be optional, and that’s exactly where bypass filtration systems make a real difference.

There are two main reasons why spas with bypass systems are better:

1. Improved Safety, Especially for Families

If a filter gets clogged, a spa without a bypass system can develop dangerously strong suction, especially near the filter inlet. This can pose a serious risk, particularly for children.

With a bypass system:

  • Suction is safely rerouted to the footwell suction from the filters
  • Entrapment risks are significantly reduced
  • Approved safety covers help prevent hair or body entrapment in the footwell suction
"Bypass systems aren’t just a design choice, they’re a critical safety measure that can save lives."

2. Longer Pump Life

In a non-bypass system, blocked filters can lead to overheating, breakdowns, and costly repairs because the pump will be running partially or fully empty

By making sure there is a constant water flow:

  • The pump works more efficiently
  • You extend the lifespan of your spa’s core components
  • You save money on ongoing maintenance and repairs

"Does a safety bypass system reduce water filtration? Not at all. That’s a common misconception, often used as a sales pitch by brands that don’t use bypass systems. Even when the bypass is active, your spa continues to filter the water multiple times every hour. You're still getting excellent water quality, just with the added benefit of a safety fallback in case the main filter becomes blocked."

Managing Director

What Is a ‘No-Bypass’ Filtration System?

In a no-bypass or 100% filtered system, all water flows through the filter, no exceptions. Some brands promote this as a way to ensure that all circulating water is filtered before entering the pump or jets.

How it works:

  • Every drop of water is pulled through the filter.
  • If the filter becomes clogged, suction increases at the filter inlet.
  • Without a bypass, this can create strong suction, posing a risk, particularly if the filter is removed or compromised.

Why do some brands choose No-Bypass?

Simply put, a no-bypass system takes less plumbing and labour, which means it is a cheaper option. This reduces the cost and increases the profit margin for the manufacturer.

Spa World will not compromise safety for profit.

Side-by-Side Comparison: Bypass vs No-Bypass Filtration

Feature

Bypass Filtration (Vortex®, Fisher®, & Jacuzzi® Spas)

No-Bypass Filtration

Safety in case of blockage

Reduced suction at the filter via the bypass system

Increased suction, no relief valve. Higher safety risk

Pump protection

Prolongs pump life

Pumps may overheat due to low water flow

Hair/entrapment risk

Hair-safe suction covers; approved to AU/NZ standards

Higher risk if suction is concentrated

Filtration consistency

100%filtered multiple times/hour

100% filtered, but only if the filter stays clean

Energy efficiency

Pump runs more efficiently under variable loads

Energy consumption drops if filters are clogged

Maintenance sensitivity

Forgiving if filters get dirty or removed

The system relies heavily on clean filters

Cost to manufacturer

Higher (more components, approvals)

Cheaper to build and market

Bypass Filtration System FAQs

Can long hair get caught in the bypass suction point?

No. Spa World spas use hair-safe bypass systems that meet strict Australian and New Zealand safety standards. The suction covers are specially designed to make hair entrapment extremely unlikely, even when someone is fully submerged.

Not all spa brands can make that claim, so it's worth asking before you buy.

So, Which System Is Better?

If you're choosing a spa and safety is a top priority (especially with young children in the water), then a bypass filtration system is the clear winner.

Bypass systems, like those used in Vortex®, Fisher®, and Jacuzzi® Spas, are designed to reduce suction risks, protect your pump, and keep your spa running safely and smoothly, even if the filter gets clogged. They're a smarter, safer choice that gives you peace of mind, not just performance.

At Spa World, we believe spa ownership should be as relaxing and worry-free as the soak itself. That’s why we only sell spas with fully approved bypass safety systems, engineered to meet Australian and New Zealand standards.
