How can I clean my vinyl spa cover?

Cleaning your vinyl spa cover is simple and easy. Here are the steps on how to do it:

  • Remove the spa cover from your spa. Unfasten the spa cover from your spa and cover lifter. Remove the cover and place it on a level surface. It’s important to remove it from your spa, so none of the cleaning products accidentally get into your spa water. Make sure a garden hose is nearby and easily accessible.
  • Rinse cover to remove dirt and debris. Using a garden hose, rinse the spa cover and make sure to wash off and remove any dirt and loose debris from the cover. Set the water pressure to a soft or moderate level to prevent damaging the cover.
  • Clean with an approved cleaning product. Apply a vinyl cleaning product to the cover and scrub it thoroughly. Use an all-purpose cleaning solution that is also designed for spa covers like the 303® Fabric & Vinyl Cleaner. After spraying, scrub the cover with wet cloth in a circular motion. It is recommended to clean by sections or patches to avoid the cleaning product from getting dry before you can scrub it. For simple routine cleanings, scrub the top side of the cover only. Just rinse off the bottom part with water. Avoid using a cleaning agent that contains alcohol or bleach. These products can remove the protective layer of the cover against UV rays and mildews.
  • Rinse and dry the cover. After fully cleaning and scrubbing, rinse the cover thoroughly using a garden hose. Wipe the cover with a dry towel and let it air dry.
  • Apply a protectant product. After drying, it is advisable to apply a UV vinyl protectant spray like the 303® Spa Cover Vinyl UV Protectant Spray. This provides protection from the Sun's UV rays and other outdoor elements that can damage your spa cover. Conditioning provides a protective surface and will help prevent the cover from getting dirty again. Spread the protectant over the cover's top surface evenly using a fresh microfiber cloth. You can do this at least once every three months. Avoid using protectant products that are petroleum-based.
  • Reattach the cover to the spa.

How can I clean the interior foam of my vinyl spa cover?

Cleaning your spa cover doesn’t stop with the outside. You should also take time to clean the interior foam which can begin to grow mould. Here are the steps to do it:

  • Remove the foam from the outer cover. Find the zipper of the spa cover and remove the interior foam from it. You may check your product manual if you're having problems locating a concealed zipper.
  • Check for holes and repair. Note which side of the foam faces up as you remove it from the spa cover. Check the foam if there are holes and tears in the plastic liners and use duct or packaging tape to patch those damages.
  • Use a mould cleaner. You may use the 303® Mould & Mildew Cleaner + Blocker to clean the foam cores. Spray the cleaner on the foam surface and scrub with a microfibre towel or soft brush. Give it 1-2 minutes to allow the product to penetrate the surface. Rinse off using a damp microfibre towel. Don’t use bleach as it is too corrosive and can deteriorate the foam.
  • Let the foam cores dry evenly. Make sure that all components of the spa cover are air-dried before putting them together.

Important Note: Never leave the foam under direct sunlight. Too much heat can melt it.

  • After drying, put the interior foam back into the spa cover. Flip the foam over to prevent sagging. The side that was previously facing up should now be facing down. You can do the flipping twice a year.

In Summary

Maintaining your spa cover is part of your spa maintenance. Protecting it is equivalent to protecting your spa. That is why it is recommended to clean your cover every one to three months to preserve it and extend its life.

Regular cleaning can also protect it from chemical deterioration, as well as damages caused by outdoor and weather elements.

Since vinyl makes up most spa covers, it's best to clean them with a vinyl cleaner. Not only will it keep it sanitised, but it will keep its colour from fading.
