Creating a pool feel with an in-deck installation

One of the key goals for this project was to avoid the look of a standalone spa and instead create the feel of a classic swimming pool integrated into the space. Sinking the Vortex Aqualounge into the deck helped achieve a cleaner, more polished finish while improving accessibility and flow throughout the outdoor area.

The result is a swim spa that feels intentionally built into the home rather than added afterwards. It also allowed the owners to create multiple usable zones around the spa for lounging, entertaining, and relaxing with family and friends.

Designed for Fitness, Family, and Everyday Use

The Vortex® Aqualounge™ was selected because it could comfortably balance fitness and lifestyle needs in a companct space. The owners wanted enough room for proper swim training while still maintaining a generous area for family use and entertaining.

Importantly, they also wanted something the whole family would continue using over time. Rather than investing in a large traditional pool that may see less use in later years, the warm water swim spa creates a more social environment that naturally encourages gathering, relaxation, and everyday use across all seasons.

Solving Challenges on a Sloping Block

Like many elevated homes, the site came with several installation challenges. The sloping block required additional retaining wall support to strengthen the surrounding structure before installation could begin.

Access was another major consideration, with the Vortex® Aqualounge™ carefully craned over a neighbouring property to position it correctly within the new deck area. While the process was complex, the extra planning and engineering allowed the owners to achieve the seamless built-in finish they originally envisioned.

Coastal Styling That Feels Calm and Relaxed

The wider outdoor remodel focused heavily on creating a softer, resort-inspired atmosphere that complemented the home’s rustic coastal character. The James Hardie white concrete-look decking became a defining design feature, helping the entire space feel brighter, calmer, and more open.

Layered tropical planting adds privacy and softness around the deck, while the lighter colour palette reflects heat and keeps the area comfortable during warmer months. The customer also added festoon lighting to bring warmth into the space at night, creating an inviting environment for evening entertaining and downtime.

The Hardie fibre cement decking wraps the spa for durability and low maintenance in all seasons.
