Thinking of installing a swim spa in Perth but not sure if you have the space?

You might be surprised what’s possible with a small backyard, a bit of creativity, the right spa, and some expert advice.

Matt’s backyard was just 25m²—a space many people would call too small for a swim spa, let alone a luxury retreat. His journey proves that with smart research and planning (and a lot of grit), dreams can come true.

He imagined a spa, half-sunken into the ground. Bamboo lighting on the fence. A small deck with hidden storage. A layout with clear zones—BBQ, lounging, and the star of the show: a Vortex™ Aquagym™ swim spa.

“It’s like three backyards in one—but it all flows. And because the spa is set down, it doesn’t dominate. It feels integrated.”

When planning and designing his outdoor area, Matt had three main goals:

  1. It had to be low maintenance
  2. It needed to feel private
  3. And most of all, it had to have a holiday vibe

"I’m pretty pleased with how it’s turned out. I wanted it to have a kind of oasis or retreat feel to it. So that’s the basis of it."

Importantly, he worked to local WA council regulations to know exactly what he could fit into his space while still meeting compliance.

“Swim spas are high, and there are regulations that come with sinking them into the ground. I wanted to get mine within a spec that meant I didn’t have to have engineering approvals. I also wanted the spa to be at a height where you could comfortably sit on the side and talk to somebody in it.”

"After a hard day’s work, it’s really nice to come home, open a bottle of wine, come out here and just enjoy it."
Matt Cowdell, Vortex™ Aquagym™ Owner, Scarborough WA

The idea for the theme came to Matt while on holiday in Bali.

"I was having a few beers, and I saw some bamboo, and I thought, 'I could use that. Put a seam in the middle, drill some holes, put lights in it, put it on the wall.' When I have a few beers, I tend to have these crazy ideas!"

Crazy idea or not, the vision stuck. When he returned to Perth, Matt got to work. That idea became a plan, and the plan became action. Choosing the right swim spa was his first step.

Why Matt Chose the Vortex™ Aquagym™ Max Pro Plus Swim Spa

Matt spent hours researching spa models, climate suitability, and energy efficiency. He even considered installing a pool, but quickly realised it wouldn’t meet their lifestyle needs.

“I did a lot of research on products and cost and what’s the best option for the Australian climate in regards to UV rays – lots of stuff like that,” says Matt.

“I also had to work with my backyard and the space I had. The research helped me work out what size spa to get and if I could fit it in. I also checked a lot of reviews – productreview.com, for example, was excellent.”

"It’s much nicer looking than a pool, there are no noisy pumps, and they’re all hidden. I have friends with pools who wish they went with a swim spa."

He chose the Vortex™ Aquagym™ because of its smart features, low running costs, and Spa World’s reputation for service. With automated water care, chromotherapy lighting, powerful swim jets, and sleek design, the Aquagym™ ticked every box.

"Another option would have been a pool, but you don’t have the nice lights or the bubbles, and a pool is not technically year-round, where this spa is."

Before & After: How to Build a Small Backyard Oasis in Perth

When Matt first purchased his home, the backyard was nothing but a pile of dirt. But he had a vision: a low-maintenance, private, and peaceful space to unwind.

Over a long, Perth summer, Matt single-handedly dug out more than 30 tonnes of sand by hand. He worked late nights, Christmas Day, and through Perth's 40°C heat. After preparing the space and pouring concrete for the base, the swim spa was craned in and the surrounding decking installed.

Matt says there was a lot of preparation work required before he started digging and planning the decking. He needed to know exactly what he could fit into his space and be sure he was complying with his local council’s regulations.

"Swim spas are high, and there are regulations that come with sinking them into the ground. I wanted to get mine within a spec that meant I didn’t have to have engineering approvals. I also wanted the spa to be at a height where you could comfortably sit on the side and talk to somebody in it."

"The whole area definitely has the wow factor. No one expects a swim spa to be in this garden."

As with any DIY project, not everything went as planned:

  • He had to relocate stormwater pipes
  • The spa was craned in slightly off-position

"When I got home from work about one in the morning, I went straight out with a four-wheel-drive high lift jack, jacked up the spa and pushed it over to the right line... I was dripping in sweat by the time I’d finished but at least it meant I could actually get some sleep."

Despite the hiccups, the final result is a beautifully finished space using quality stainless steel fittings, composite decking, glass safety barriers, and hidden service access. It’s a true DIY marvel.

Sitting outside and relaxing couple

Matt and Amy enjoy relaxing evenings outdoors in their Bali-inspired oasis

"Ultimately, Matt wanted a space where he could just be in the moment, relax, forget about the day and feel transported to a holiday destination."

"The whole time I was conscious I needed it within 20mm to make sure the spa would sit level."

"The only aspect I didn’t do myself was the concrete. I got somebody to come in and do that bit. It all went pretty quickly from that point on."

"The whole area definitely has the wow factor. No one expects a swim spa to be in this garden."

DIY Tip from Matt: "I didn’t know you could get a mini digger in here. If I did, I would’ve!"

The end result? A three-zone outdoor oasis with a BBQ, dining area, and the show-stopping Aquagym™ Max Pro Plus swim spa.

How Much Does a Swim Spa Cost to Install in Perth?

Matt completed most of the work himself:

  • Decking: ~$11,000
  • Swim spa with heat pump: ~$30,000
  • Total cost: ~$45,000*

*Prices accurate at the time of writing

"The total cost of the renovation, including materials and the swim spa, was less than $50,000. That’s not a bad price for a 24/7 holiday retreat," Matt says.

"It would have cost a lot more if I’d paid someone else to do it. I still get in the spa some nights and can’t believe it’s real."

"I thought the price of the swim spa was fantastic, that’s with the heat pump. The quality is excellent, as are all the extra features."

What are the spa and swim spa regulations in WA?

Thinking of installing a swim spa in Western Australia? You’ll need to consider local rules around fencing, permits, decking, and electrical setup.

Matt designed his spa height and deck layout carefully to avoid needing engineering approvals; a great move for saving time and complexity.

Key points to know:

  • You’ll likely need a building permit for the spa and safety barrier
  • Lockable covers aren’t enough—a compliant fence is required
  • Decking height and placement can affect approval needs
  • Electrical work must be done by a licensed professional

Thinking of a Swim Spa? Here Are the Questions Most Buyers Ask

Can you really fit a swim spa in a small backyard?

Yes—and Matt’s 25m² courtyard proves it. With careful planning, even tight urban spaces can accommodate a full-size spa. The key is designing with purpose: sunken placement, clever zoning, and multi-use decking.

Do I need council approval to install a swim spa?

In WA, you may need a building permit—especially if you're building a deck, fencing the area, or sinking the spa. Always check with your local council before you start. 🔗 Read the full regulations guide →

Is it better to install a swim spa above ground or inground?

Both have pros and cons. Matt chose a partially sunken install for better aesthetics, comfort, and to avoid complex approvals. Above-ground installs are faster but can dominate the space visually.

How much does a swim spa actually cost?

Matt’s Vortex™ Aquagym™ Max Pro Plus was around $30,000 AUD, not including decking or landscaping. Prices vary based on size, features, and add-ons like heat pumps or lighting.

What does installation involve?

Here’s what Matt did:

  • Hand-dug and prepped the ground
  • Installed a concrete slab
  • Had the spa craned in
  • Built a deck around it
  • Connected a SpaNet™ heat pump via licensed electrician

Depending on your setup, it might be simpler—but planning access, drainage, and safety barriers is key.

Is it easy to maintain?

Yes—especially with features like automated water care, filtration, and insulated covers. Matt’s spa runs mostly on solar and takes just minutes a week to maintain.

“It’s 75% more energy-efficient than my previous spa… I still get in the spa some nights and can’t believe it’s real.”

What’s it like buying from Spa World Perth?

Buyers like Matt often say the same thing: no pressure, expert help, and real support.
